Grassroots football development will take the spotlight in Lagos as 16 teams prepare to compete in the third edition of the Spires 5-Aside Naija Street Soccer Tournament, scheduled to begin on October 27 at the Union Bank Sports Club in Surulere.
The teams have been drawn into four groups of four, with each side hoping to progress through the competition and emerge as champions. The tournament provides a competitive platform for young players to showcase their football abilities and gain valuable experience.
In Group A, Orion & Leon will face competition from Crown, Smiler All Champions and Blood & Sand. Group B consists of Chekas United, Greater Tomorrow, Progidy and Diamond FC, while ASD Academy, Angso Sports Club, WASOLA and EMALJUS FC have been placed in Group C.
White Tigers, New Generation, Alphas and All Saints complete the line-up in Group D. The groupings have set up several contests to watch as the teams prepare for the opening matches.
However, the tournament will extend beyond football, with organisers introducing opportunities aimed at improving participants’ access to technology. Spires Media announced plans to distribute about 50 laptops during the programme, with support from telecommunications infrastructure provider IHS.
The initiative reflects the organisers’ broader focus on combining sporting activities with educational and technological development, giving young people opportunities to build skills that can benefit them outside the game.
Lagos State Football Association chairman, Hajji Gafar Olawale Liameed, praised the initiative and expressed optimism about its future. He also highlighted the prospect of developing a sports complex equipped with football pitches, accommodation and other facilities to support players.
As preparations gather momentum, the tournament is expected to bring together emerging football talents while promoting grassroots participation and youth development through sports.
