Nigerian international Victor Osimhen returned to the UEFA Champions League scoresheet as Galatasaray defeated French side Lille 4-2 away from home on Wednesday, securing their first victory in this season’s competition.

The Super Eagles striker scored in the 61st minute to complete Galatasaray’s comeback after an entertaining encounter in France. The goal ended his wait for a Champions League strike since February and provided a major boost for the Turkish champions following their previous 4-1 defeat to Barcelona.

Galatasaray started strongly, taking the lead in the second minute through Yunus Akgun, who capitalised on a defensive mistake by Lille. However, the hosts responded five minutes later as teenage forward Soriba Diaoune levelled the score after getting behind the visitors’ defence.

Diaoune struck again in the 39th minute, putting Lille ahead after reacting quickly to a rebound. Galatasaray avoided going into the break behind when Aleksey Batrakov headed home a cross from Roland Sallai in the 44th minute to restore parity.

The visitors took control seven minutes into the second half when Lucas Torreira’s header from a corner ended up in the net following a final touch from Lille goalkeeper Berke Ozer. Osimhen subsequently extended the advantage, finishing a quick attacking move to give Galatasaray a comfortable two-goal cushion.

The Nigerian forward showed respect for his former employers by declining to celebrate after scoring. Osimhen represented Lille during the 2019/2020 season, recording 18 goals in 38 appearances before moving to Napoli the following year.

The victory gives Galatasaray renewed confidence in their European campaign, while Lille will be concerned about defensive lapses that have cost them valuable points. The French club remain without a point from their Champions League home matches this season. Galatasaray will welcome Stuttgart in their next European fixture on November 3, while Lille travel to Norway to face Bodo/Glimt on the same date.
