A leadership dispute is threatening to overshadow the planned election of a new traditional ruler in Ozom Mgbagbu-Owa Autonomous Community in Ezeagu Local Government Area of Enugu State.
The election, scheduled for October 10, has reportedly generated disagreement among residents over the process for selecting the next candidate. At the centre of the dispute is the community’s established rotational arrangement for producing the Igwe.
Some stakeholders are insisting that the selection should follow the provisions of the community’s constitution, which they say determines the council ward entitled to present candidates. They argue that any departure from the arrangement could create further disagreements among the people.
Concerned groups have called on relevant authorities in Enugu State to intervene and ensure that the electoral process is conducted peacefully and in line with the community’s established rules. They warned that failure to resolve the disagreement before the election could heighten tension.
With the traditional leadership election drawing closer, stakeholders are being urged to prioritise dialogue and peaceful resolution of the dispute. Community leaders and residents are expected to work towards an outcome that will preserve unity and prevent the disagreement from escalating into a security concern.
