A fresh debate over the quality of public education in Lagos State has emerged between APC governorship candidate Obafemi Hamzat and ADC candidate Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, with both presenting different assessments of the state’s education system.
Rhodes-Vivour, speaking at a town hall for Lagos governorship candidates, criticised the condition of some public schools and called for increased investment in infrastructure, teacher development and learning facilities. He also proposed expanding access to schools at the local government and ward levels.
He argued that the large presence of private schools compared with public institutions raises concerns about the state of government-funded education. Rhodes-Vivour also advocated an education model that places greater emphasis on practical skills, innovation and problem-solving.
Responding to the criticism, Hamzat rejected the description of Lagos’ public education system as a failure. He pointed to the performance of Lagos students in international competitions, including the reported success of students from Surulere Grammar School in a competition in England involving participants from 66 countries.
Hamzat nevertheless acknowledged that more work is required in the education sector, saying the government must identify existing gaps while building on progress already recorded. The exchange has placed public-school standards and educational development among the issues featuring in the emerging 2027 Lagos governorship debate.
