The Lagos State Government has unveiled plans to significantly increase the number of healthcare professionals trained in the state, targeting an annual admission of 2,500 students at the Lagos State University College of Medicine (LASUCOM) by 2028.

As part of the initiative, the government has converted the former CACOVID Centre at Mainland Hospital, Yaba, into an additional academic facility to accommodate the expected rise in student enrolment.

The facility was renovated and expanded to address the institution’s shortage of teaching space. The project received government approval in December 2024, while construction work commenced in March 2025.

Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Professor Akin Abayomi, said the expansion was part of efforts to tackle the shortage of medical personnel in the country, particularly as many Nigerian-trained health professionals continue to relocate abroad in search of better opportunities.

He explained that the government was working to increase the number of healthcare workers trained locally while creating an environment that could encourage skilled Nigerians living abroad to return home.

The newly upgraded facility is expected to improve classroom teaching and practical training for medical students. The state government is also pursuing plans to transform LASUCOM into a full-fledged University of Medicine and Health Sciences to strengthen medical education and increase the supply of qualified healthcare professionals.
