Several state chapters of the All Progressives Congress have opposed the political coalition being promoted by FCT Minister Nyesom Wike ahead of the 2027 elections, with some party officials urging him to formally join the APC if he intends to support its presidential candidate.
The disagreement centres on Wike’s Rainbow Coalition, which he has presented as a cross-party platform for supporting President Bola Tinubu at the presidential level while allowing different parties to field candidates in governorship and legislative contests. APC officials in several states say such an arrangement could create divided political loyalties within the party.
In Zamfara, Governor Dauda Lawal said Wike should either join the APC or reconsider his continued involvement with the coalition. Similar positions have been expressed by APC officials in Imo, Gombe and Ondo, who said their campaign structures are focused on candidates contesting under the party’s platform.
However, reactions within the APC have not been completely uniform. While some party figures said Wike would be welcome if he chose to defect, a faction within the Benue chapter expressed a preference for him to remain in the Peoples Democratic Party.
The disagreement adds to ongoing political manoeuvring ahead of the 2027 elections, particularly over whether support for a presidential candidate can operate separately from party structures contesting governorship and legislative positions. Wike has continued to defend the coalition, while APC leaders in several states maintain that their campaign efforts will centre on the party’s official candidates.
