President Bola Tinubu has said Nigeria has moved past the most difficult phase of his administration’s economic reforms, declaring that the country is now entering a period focused on prosperity, job creation and improved living standards.
Tinubu made the declaration in his Independence Day address on Thursday as Nigeria marked its 66th anniversary. He said the reforms introduced since 2023 were aimed at correcting longstanding economic challenges, despite the difficulties they created for citizens.
The President said economic indicators had improved, citing more than four per cent growth in 2026, declining inflation from its peak, rebuilt foreign reserves and greater stability in the foreign exchange market. He also said non-oil exports generated more than $6bn in 2025.
He said the government would now concentrate on reducing the cost of living, expanding agricultural production, improving infrastructure, creating jobs and supporting businesses. Tinubu also highlighted programmes such as NELFUND and CREDICORP as part of efforts to expand access to education and consumer credit.
According to him, the next phase of his administration will focus on creating widespread prosperity rather than simply managing economic difficulties. He said the government would continue strengthening social protection, healthcare, education and other public services while pursuing sustained economic growth.
