Cancer patients enrolled in Nigeria’s health insurance system are set to receive greater financial assistance as the National Health Insurance Authority expands the range of treatment costs covered under its programmes.
The latest intervention targets some of the major expenses associated with cancer care, particularly the purchase of medicines and specialised medical procedures that can place significant financial pressure on families.
As part of the arrangement, qualifying beneficiaries will get support for cancer drugs, while assistance is also available for radiotherapy and several diagnostic procedures used in detecting and monitoring the disease.
Covered investigations include mammograms, CT scans, MRI scans, bone scans and laboratory examinations, giving patients access to a broader package of cancer-related services.
The NHIA said the development reflects its efforts to strengthen financial protection within the health insurance system and ensure that the cost of managing serious illnesses does not prevent insured Nigerians from receiving necessary treatment.
