Political tension has intensified in Cross River State following an attack that interrupted a Peoples Democratic Party consultation exercise in Calabar South Local Government Area.
The PDP said the incident occurred at two separate venues during its mobilisation activities, alleging that suspected armed attackers disrupted the gatherings and left some participants injured. Vehicles were also reportedly damaged during the disturbance.
Reacting to the development, the PDP condemned the violence and called on security authorities to investigate the incident and bring those responsible to justice. The party also urged its supporters to remain peaceful despite the attack.
The All Progressives Congress rejected allegations linking its members to the incident, distancing the party from the violence and accusing the PDP of attempting to associate the APC with the disturbance.
The police said security personnel had been deployed to the affected areas while investigations continued to establish what happened and identify those behind the attack.
