Enugu State could be on the verge of an unusual feat as it seeks to host another major gathering of the Nigerian Guild of Editors in 2027. The Coal City has already hosted major Guild events in 2025 and 2026, putting the state in position to potentially welcome the media body for a third consecutive year.
The first of the recent gatherings took place in June 2025, when more than 400 editors and senior media practitioners converged on Enugu for the Guild’s Biennial National Convention. The following year, the city hosted the 22nd All Nigeria Editors Conference, which focused on the media’s role in protecting democracy and tackling the growing threat of artificial intelligence-generated misinformation.
At the close of the 2026 event, Governor Peter Mbah extended an invitation for the editors to return to Enugu in 2027. If the invitation is accepted and another major Guild gathering is held there, the state would have three successive years of hosting significant national media events.
The possible 2027 return could also give journalists an opportunity to revisit projects and developments they have previously inspected in the state. During the 2026 gathering, editors toured major infrastructure, healthcare, education, tourism and security projects while also engaging the state government on its development plans.
However, the proposed 2027 event is not yet a confirmed fixture. If it eventually goes ahead, Enugu would achieve what is being described as a media “hat-trick” — three consecutive years of major NGE gatherings — further placing the Coal City in the spotlight of Nigeria’s media community.
