The Lagos State Government is adopting a community-based approach to tackling HIV by extending prevention, testing and treatment efforts across all 57 local government areas and local council development areas.
The move is aimed at bringing HIV services closer to residents and improving access for people who may not ordinarily visit health facilities for screening or treatment.
Under the new approach, greater attention will be given to communities and public spaces where people can easily access information, testing and referrals, while local authorities are expected to play a stronger role in coordinating the response.
Officials said strengthening the participation of the councils would make it easier to identify people living with HIV, link them with appropriate care and reduce the number of patients lost to follow-up.
The state also plans to improve collaboration among stakeholders and strengthen local data collection as part of efforts to sustain progress in the fight against HIV/AIDS.
